Difference Between PPC and OPC Cement

There are a variety of cements available in the market, each with their own features and characteristics which distinguishes them from other kinds of cements. When it comes to choosing the type of cement in a construction project, choosing the most appropriate and correct type of cement is essential in order to ensure the durability of the structure and maintain its structural integrity. In this article, we shall state the differences between the two most commonly type of cements: OPC cement and PPC cement and how exactly are they different from each other in composition and function.

Ordinary Portland Cement, often abbreviated to OPC cement, is the most commonly manufactured and used cement in the world. Often, this type of cement is manufactured to powder by mixing limestone and an assortment of raw materials which consist of argillaceous, calcareous and gypsum. It is preferred in situations which requires fast construction. In the market this cement is usually available in three grades, namely, OPC 33, OPC 43 and OPC 53, respectively. These grades imply the minimum strength of the cement after a period of twenty-eight days, thus it allows for the selection of the proper grade for constructing something specific.

On the other hand, PPC cement – also called Portland Pozzolana Cement – is manufactured by combining pozzolanic materials. Pozzolana is a natural or artificial material that contains silica particles in a reactive form. Besides pozzolanic materials in specified proportions, PPC cement also contains OPC cement clinkers and gypsum. Pozzolanic materials consist of materials like volcanic ash, calcined clay or silica fumes and fly ash, which make about 15 to 35% of the cement’s total mass. Hence it can be seen that PPC cement is a composite brand of cement that has its own manufacturing materials and processes.

The differences between OPC and PPC cement like in how they are constructed and used. In order to make PPC cement, one only needs to add fly ash and volcanic ash to OPC cement. In essence, PPC is just a variation of OPC cement. Although both OPC and PPC cements are eco-friendly, the use of natural and industrial waste in PPC cement reduces environmental pollution. In OPC cement, there are three available grades, whereas PPC matches OPC 33 after it has undergone the process of curing. PPC has lower initial strength than OPC but it hardens over time with proper curing.
